Spill Containment

More Gulf Spill Containment Measures Being Taken, But Will They Prove To Be Effective?

[Posted on Aug 23]

In what is now undeniably the largest oil spill in the history of the Gulf of Mexico and indeed, the history of the United States, a plethora of oil spill containment measures are being taken with the most recent being the introduction of an enormous Taiwanese “whale” oil skimmer which is now being tested near the site of the April 20th Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion that set off the current oil leak crisis.

Although the current mainstream news cycle is slowly turning its concentrated gaze away from the Gulf oil spill, there is still undoubtedly an intense amount of attention being paid to the on-going Gulf of Mexico oil leak crisis, and although a tremendous amount of resources are being thrown at the oil spill cleanup and spill containment effort, many interested individuals are continuing to ask the question, “are the current containment plans working?” The answer to this question seems to be as murky as the now-oil covered waters of the once-pristine Gulf. Although current oil containment efforts are being touted as effective by BP, many feel that more effective oil containment efforts could and should be implemented as soon as possible before even more damage can be done.

Effective oil spill containment is no doubt a challenging endeavor to undertake, especially when considering the magnitude of the current oil leak crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, but challenging or not, effective containment measures absolutely need to be put in place as soon as possible before even more destruction can befall the fragile ecosystems and economic systems in the Gulf of Mexico and within the Gulf states.
